Parsakhi

Hisampur Parsakhi is a village is Pargana Kara , Tehsil Sirathu, District Kaushambi situated along the GT Road. This village is populated almost wholly by Pandey Brahmins. They have an interesting account about their origin. Shahzadpur village is to the west of Parsakhi. Parsakhi has a distinct and important relation with regards to the Sadaat-i-Bukhari of Chail.

BUT

I did not go there to see the Pandeys , I visited Parsakhi to locate the tomb of Qazi Sayyid Hisam-ud-din Hasan Bukhari (Rah) who is the famed ancestor of all the Bukhari sayyids of Pargana Chail. Eight whole villages were / are populated with his descendents are as follows:-

1. Kokhraj ( Original Koh-i-khiraj)
2. Kohinam (Koh-i-Inam)
3. Kashia

4. AlamChand
5. Baserhi
6. Baragaon (+ Nazarganj ,a muhalla of Baragaon) ( + a branch in Qazi Rasoolpur)
7. Naraur or Narwar
8. Mendara ( across the ganga in Pargana Nawabganj, Allahabad

I would write about all these villages one by one but I am yet to visit all the villages. Till that time, please bear with me.

Now I come back to Parsakhi , Qazi Hisamuddin ( the correct pronunciation is Husam-ud-din) was the son of  Syed Shihabuddin S/o Makhdoom Nasiruddin Nar S/o Makhdoom Jahaniyan Jahan Gasht Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari Uchi.

By virtue of a great blunder committed by the compiler of Mirat al Jalali who declared Qazi Hisamuddin to be son of Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal , from where did Syed Khalil Ahmad Mindarvi got this clue ? From where did he got this information ?

This means that the elders of this family had not only lost the touch with the original family at Uch but they also lost the original Shajra and when they could not find the broken links , they tied the name  of Qazi Husamuddin with the name of Sadruddin Raju Qattal.

I too wrote the same version of Mirat al Jalali few years ago when I started my reaserch but later on when I checked the original sources and found the information in MIrat al Jalali to be wrong and misleading. Then I took up the reasearch and found the name of Syed Shihabuddin to be the father of Syed Hisamuddin where it was mentioned that Syed Hisam's descendents are found in Allahabad. Later on I got it verified and confirmed with the Shajra Navees of Uchh as well.

My research says Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal had no son with the name of Hisamuddin. My research is as follows:

Syed Sadruddin Raju Qattal Suhrwardi ( 730-827 AH)

Was a famous saint of Suharwardi order, was the son of Syed Ahmad Kabir and younger brother of Syed Jalaluddin Bukhari aka Makhdoom Jahanian Jahan Gasht of Uchh, He died on, 16 Jumada Al Aakhir 827 Hijra , 1424 AD leaving behind five sons  ( in some records only four) namely,

The names of real sons of Makhdoom Raju Qattal

  •      Jalaludddin Khwaja
  •         Roohullah
  •          Abu ishaq
  •         Abdul Azeez
  •         Banda nawaz
Out of them only three got their lineage continued. There is no one with the name of Husamuddin amongst his children. I checked this first in the books then I contacted Uchh Bahawalpur to find out the details. I was confirmed that there was no son of Raju Qatal with the name of Husamuddin.

The Story composed and written by Mirat al Jalali is as under (which I copied few years back )

Saiyyid Sadruddin Raju Qatal (Rah) of Uchh ( now in Bahawalpur, Pakistan) and grandson of Sayyid Ahmad Kabeer ( Rah). They are Naqvi Sayyids who came to India from Bukhara this is why they are called Bukhari. The elder brother of Saiyyid Sadruddin was Makhdoom Jahaniyan Jahan-Gasht (1308-1383), famous Suharwardi saint of 8th century hijri. His real name Sayyid Jalal-ud-din Bukhari. Jahanian travelled extensively across the sub-continent and won the title of Jahaniyan Jahan Gasht.Firoz Shah Tughlaq was highly under influence of Makhdoom Jahaniyan.(Rah). The whole family was suharwardi and mureed of Suharwardi Saints of Multan. ( Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria and Shaikh Ruknuddin Abul Fath family) Rah.

Qazi Hisamuddin was born and brought up in Uchh and the learned readers who are aware of the Nawahun episode during the last time of Sayyid Jalaluddin Bukhari (Rah) would know that after the demise of Makhdoom Jahaniyan, how Hazrat Sadr-ud-din Raju Qatal (Rah) pursued the matter and went to meet Firoz Shah Tughlaq at Delhi. In this journey he was accompanied by his son ,Qazi Husam-ud-din as well and after when the whole episode ended.Syed Sadruddin expressed his wish to return home. Firoz Shah on hearing this, requested that if he is not staying at Delhi then at least allow Qazi Husam-ud-din stay back with him for he would be benefitted with his learning and piety. Hazrat Sadruddin relented to Firoz Shah’s request and thus Qazi Husam-ud-din got a time to stay in Delhi. At delhi he stayed with his maternals ( Qazi Nizam-ud-din) who were his in-laws also. ( Mirat al Jalali Page 40-45 By Khaleel Ahmad Mendarvi published 1918)

In the meantime firoz Shah got the news that the Bhars ( A belligerent community) have revolted and were creating disturbances on large scale in Parsakhi and Koh etc and furthermore they were oppressing the faithful(Muslims). When he received continued reports with details of the persecution and havoc the Bhars had done, he picked up a group of soldiers and put them under the baton of Qazi Husam-ud-din to punish those rebels and bring them all to the book. Qazi Sahib left Delhi and reached Kara first which was a provincial head-quarter and after consultation with the Subahdar he proceeded towards Parsakhi. After a pitched battle, the rebels were defeated and a lot were put to death. Qazi Sahib captured the fortress of Parsakhi and then went on to take control of Koh ( Inam & Khiraj). Later on he constructed a mosque there in Koh-i-Inam which is still extant.

Firoz Shah awarded him 22 (some say 76) whole villages and requsted him to stay there and guide the common man .( Mirat-al Kunain). The wife of astrologer of Bhars, a pandey who was killed in the action, came to Qazi Sahib along with her 12 children and begged his mercy as she was now without a support and there was no one to take care of her children. Qazi Sahib very graciously awarded some villages to her children for their sustenance and ever since then the Pandey Brahmins of the entire Kara & Chail area are residing in these villages. Charwa, Samda, Saunrai ,Parsakhi, Kashia Khurd etc are still populated by Pandey Brahmins. These are sometimes called Dugdha Brahmins. The wife of the same Pandey was so impressed with this kind gesture that she eventually became a Muslim at the hands of Qazi sahib.Qazi Sahib later on distributed the other villages he received in reward amongst his 8 sons and himself settled in Parsakhi after renaming it Hisampur. It was the year 1384 AD. ( Mirat al Jalali).

About the anectode “ Aath Qazi Barah Brahman” ( Eight Qazis & Twelve Brahmans) It seems to me that it denotes that Qazi Sahib took care of not only his eight children but also the twelve Brahmin children of the Pandey also. It also signifies that the whole area must have been in possession of either 8 Qazis and their sons or of the 12 Brahmans and their sons. Any other construed meaning should be supported by historical evidences.

Sir Henry M. Elliott in his monumental book"Memoirs on the history folklore and distribution of races" has mentioned that the story of the Brahmin lady marrying Qazi Sahib is improbable that such a connection took place at that early period of the conquest. He further mentions that the Brahmin lady distributed 48 villages between her 12 children. Now It seems to me and supports the view that the number of villages that Qazi Sahib received and what he distributed must have been larger than what has been reported so far.

As mentioned earlier, Qazi Husam-ud-din was married to the daughter of Qazi Nizam-ud-din Siddiqi ,of Delhi, she bore him eight sons. This Qazi Nizam-ud-din was the son of Qazi Muin-ud-din Siddiqui , Qazi of Delhi and he was the maternal uncle of Qazi Husam-ud-din. The names of 8 sons are as follows:-

1. Siraj-ud-din
2. Mohammad Alias Lahuri
3. Ruknuddin
4. Nizamuddin
5. Meet alias Mithai
6. Aleemuddin
7. Azeemuddin
8. Burhan-ud-din

However when I visited Parsakhi recently, it was a sorry state of affairs to relate, after enquiring a few villagers about a Muslim grave , we managed to finally see the green coloured grave of Qazi Hisamuddin over a small mound, lying under the sky without any canopy or any other structure beside. The Kot (Fortress) he captured could be seen eastward along with a well but the whole area seemed to be unattended and not taken care of. There was no Hujra as such mentioned in the books. All around there were Mahua and other trees. The Kot now houses a primary school run by the government and the nearby well do reminds that it might be the same well that was used by Qazi Sahib.

I had read in Mirat-al-Jalali that there were few more graves beside Qazi Sahib , like of Qazi Mahmood Bukhari and others , there was a Chiragh-daan, a Qanati Mosque on the west ………but alas none exist today………..It was a solace to see that at least Qazi Sahib’s mazar was spared.

We offered Fatiha to the rooh of Qazi Sahib and I stood there in silence in communion with the spirit of the lion resting there…….Indeed Qazi Sahib must have been very happy to see few people who travelled and remembered & visited him in 2011 after 700 years of his demise…….Rahmatullah Alaih. ( May Allah shower His blessing upon him !)

From the villagers I came to know that that seldom do they see any people ( Once or twice in a year or few years ) coming there.

Before I conclude, I would urge our Chaili brothers in general and the Bukhari brothers in special to please take care of your ancestor’s grave. You take pride in being a Sayyid , a Bukhari , A naqvi , but it is so shameful that the person who fathered you all is lying in such a condition , un-attended, forlorn……………….

Is this apathy linked to our Deeni condition as well?

When we neither respect nor observe our Deen, when we have left the teachings of Qur'aan and Sunnat , when we have given up the noble pursuit of learning ? When we have become no different than a materialistic community who lives just to eat, drink and enjoy this transient life ? When the worldly pursuits have become our sole aim in life ? When there is no Allah and Rasool in our life

Then

Is it strange that we have left the memory and memorial of our ancestor ???

Yun to Sayyid bhi ho , Mirza bhi ho, Afghan bhi ho
Tum sabhi kuchh ho , batao to Musalman bhi ho ???

Ijazat !
